UNC & REX:
A Collaboration in Patient Care for Parkinson's disease
In 2011, in order to provide access to interdisciplinary team care for patients in a larger geographical area, UNC partnered with Rex Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation to expand specialized PD services into Wake County and beyond. Now, both Rex and UNC offer comprehensive interdisciplinary Parkinson's disease team treatment from clinicians highly specialized in Parkinson's. The relationship between UNC and Rex enables clinicians to refer patients between centers as needed, and streamlines communication about treatment and recommendations between all clinicians involved in a patient's care. Both UNC and REX are Parkinson's "hubs," being very closely connected to and in partnership with surrounding Parkinson's resources such as neurologists, support groups and exercise classes. The interdisciplinary team at both UNC and REX also make up faculty presenters at UNC's Colloquium on Interdisciplinary Care for Parkinson's, a training offered in various sites across NC about once per year.
